Cosmetic Dental Veneers: How the Process Goes

Thinking about getting some dental veneers? Here’s how the process ideally goes, according to WebMD:

How It Happens

When you get dental veneers, expect the process to take at least 2 to 3 trips to the dentist. The first one will focus on the consultation. The last two will entail the creation of the veneers and their application.

1. Consultation, Diagnosis and Treatment Plan. You schedule the appointment and go your dentist to ask about the cosmetic dental veneers. Your dentist will perform a teeth exam to see if the treatment is right for your teeth. Once it’s been determined that dental veneers will work, discussions about the procedure will follow. This will mainly focus on what the steps will be along with the limitations of the treatment. If there’s still time, impressions of your mouth as well as teeth may be taken.

2. Preparation of Cosmetic Veneers. First up is the enamel modification. About ½ millimeter of your enamel would be removed. Don’t worry, your dentist will provide with you a local anesthetic to numb the area, easing your discomfort. After the enamels have been trimmed, your dentist will then set out to make a model or impression of your tooth. These models are then typically delivered to a dental laboratory where the impressions are turned into dental veneers. The process usually takes about 1 to 2 weeks. If you’ve got an urgent need for veneers, your dentist can, of course, provide temporary veneers until yours are ready. However, these come at an extra charge so expect to pay more if you ask for this service.

3. Application of the Veneers. This is when the dental veneers are finally bonded to your teeth. Before that happens though, expect the dentist to try a few test runs to check the feel and fit of the veneer against your teeth. This might include repeated removals and trimming of the veneer until the perfect fit has been achieved. If you don’t like the color, your dentist can adjust the color with the cement that’s going to be used to put your teeth in place. When the veneers are ready, your teeth will etched after a thorough cleaning and polishing. The etching gives your teeth a rough texture which improves the bonding process. Once the veneers have been applied, your dentist will remove any excess veneer or cement. And just like that, you have brighter teeth in place.
