Are You a Good Candidate for Porcelain Veneers in DC?

by | Aug 22, 2016 | Dentist

Porcelain or dental veneers, also sometimes called dental porcelain laminates, are used in cosmetic dentistry to restore someone’s smile after a tooth has been damaged. These veneers are made out of very thin pieces of porcelain and are attached to your teeth. Veneers are individually created for each patient and look just like real teeth. While using porcelain veneers may sound perfect to you, they’re not for everyone. Here are some reasons why you may or may not be a good candidate.

Individuals Who Are Good Candidates

Your dentist may suggest dental veneers if you have a tooth or multiple teeth with chips or cracks in them. Veneers can also be used to hide any gaps you have between your teeth or to make your teeth look straight when they are actually slightly misaligned. Porcelain veneers can also be an option for hiding discolored teeth, especially if you’ve tried various tooth-whitening options and haven’t had much luck with them.

You do have to have healthy teeth in order to have porcelain veneers in DC placed in your mouth. Part of the procedure involves removing a very small amount of enamel from the front of your teeth so the veneers feel natural and don’t make your teeth stick out. If you have teeth that do not have much enamel left, it may not be possible to add veneers. You also need to have good oral health overall.

Factors That May Make You a Poor Candidate

If you have gum disease or have any teeth that are decaying, porcelain veneers are not a good option for you. Having an infection in the root of a tooth can also be an issue since a root canal requires a crown. Finally, if you grind your teeth in your sleep you may not be a good candidate for veneers, either, since you could damage them.
